Creative project after brain injury: building our gallery!

Aug 4, 2025

A creative project after a brain injury can take many forms. We needed new frames to display artwork created by clients attending our Centre. The existing ones were too heavy and showing signs of wear and tear.

What started as a chat between Philippa, our Resource Centre Supervisor, and Rebecca, our Therapeutic Art Guide, has turned into something rather special: our very own White Cube Gallery!

This is one of our many initiatives taking place in our centre in Henley-on-Thames, a welcoming and safe space for people who have experienced a brain injury.

An idea for a creative project after a brain injury

“Rebecca wanted a white wall for a White Cube Gallery with black frames for artwork that would be hinged, so artwork could be changed easily on a regular basis”, explains Philippa.

What followed was a proper team effort that had everyone involved:

Planning phase

Philippa headed off with a shopping list and a vision, ready to buy all the materials needed to bring the concept to life.

Crafting begins

Clients who attend the Centre took on the precision work, first, cutting the moulding at 45-degree angles, so all four pieces of wood could then be glued together to make the rectangular frames.

Clients then stepped in with the wood glue, carefully joining those angled pieces to create our rectangular frames. After that, white backing boards were cut to attach to the frames.

Our Wednesday clients grabbed their brushes and transformed those bare wood frames into black masterpieces!

Finally: the White Cube Gallery!

To finish, hinges were attached to the frames and then finally placed on the wall. What had been a plain pale green wall is now a proper gallery space to showcase our clients’ artwork!

Our Tuesday Art sessions with Rebecca create more than just artwork. They provide a space for expression, healing and discovery. Now, thanks to the team’s hard work, that creativity has a proper home.
